Galena, Missouri, 1953: at two in the morning, a fifteen-year-old night operator answers a call from a dead man's telephone line, and the woman whispering on it has plans for a girl. She has five nights until the school pie supper to find out who is calling, and her father has asked her to keep it from her mother.
