In the winter of 1936, with Norris Dam about to drown her hollow, a tie hacker named Delphia Wyrick buys back her own house for eleven dollars and sets out to move it up Pinhook Ridge with nothing but a mule, some lard, and her daddy's level. Her husband is paid to burn whatever the water will cover, and he has made it plain he won't lift a finger to help her.
