Peshtigo, Wisconsin, the first week of October 1871: Tollef Haugen, a seventy-one-year-old Norwegian well digger, is sinking a well by hand for his daughter's family in the Lower Sugar Bush, and every morning he tells us the depth, and every morning it is dry. He has until Sunday, October 8, to strike water and prove he came to give and not to be kept.
